I found the gears used in this sculpture in a large military surplus yard. They are a very heavy, hardened steel. It was fun trying to imagine what complex machine or vehicle they once were a part of. When I found them I immediately had the idea of doing a sculpture using these gears in a way similar to this, placing them in an upward spiral and aligned with one another so that they would rotate smoothly once a motor was added. Many of my ideas come in this way, while searching through scrap piles of shapes and parts, or old machinery.
