Just Breathe

The primary feature of this custom steampunk chandelier consists of five vintage “optical gas masks”. Behind each mask is a standard Edison style bulb base, and another mounted at the bottom of the fixture within a small steel protective cage. Vintage style bulbs add to unique style and aged look of the chandelier. I currently have five tall 20 watt bulbs with a ‘hairpin’ filament behind the masks. These create a warm glow of light that shines through the brass eyepieces and also bounces off an interior brass “cage” silhouetting and highlighting the shape of the vintage masks.

Suspended down the center is a steel rod that supports an aluminum housing. This ties the breathing hoses into the center of the piece and supports the sixth bulb mount at the bottom of the piece. I currently have a 40 watt spiral filament bulb mounted here.

ADDITIONAL MASK INFO:
U.S. Army’s M2-10A1-6 Lightweight Optical Gas Mask used from the Korean War up until the Vietnam War. It was specially made for soldiers who frequently use optical devices, like artillerymen, snipers, spotters, officers, etc… The small eyepieces were very close to the eyes to allow said use of optical devices. It has a large voice diaphragm on the front to transmit somewhat clear speech, and the latter is protected by a metal mesh material, giving ti a strange look, and below the diaphragm is the outlet valve.
